There are moments where we’ve seen something and because of our conditioning we may respond by saying, “That’s crazy.” In another instance you may be breathless from laughing at your friend’s jokes and may innocently remark, “Girl, you’re so crazy.” In both scenarios the word crazy is not utilized maliciously or with the intention to hurt anyone’s feelings. Though, what does the careless use of this word say about a generation of people who take such care in naming, renaming and repurposing everything?
There are many people who would benefit from professional mental health services but instead believe therapy is only for crazy people. What does it mean to be crazy anyway? Deranged? Extreme? Or outside of the norm?
I’d like to take a moment to examine the phrase crazy like a fox. Which means: appearing to be foolish but actually being clever. In this use of the word it paints the picture that crazy is in the eye of the beholder. It stands to reason that a very smart or strategic person may have the appearance of being crazy to someone who is unfamiliar with their intense expression of intellect.
Why write about this at all? Because words have power. Words can expand and evolve or they can destroy and devolve.
I have never met a person that didn’t benefit from releasing old trauma or grow from learning new coping techniques. Those who don’t benefit from the above mentioned are often not ready to welcome self-improvement. Frequently, these individuals will view those who are ready for change as crazy.
When one is ready for personal transformation, these words can help effectively express readiness for therapy:
1. Overwhelmed
2. Shifting
3. Evolving
4. Leveling-up
5. Seeking (to understand self and others)
6. Ready
