Purpose has always been a big part of my focus. When my daughter was born, I named her Nia which is Swahili for purpose. Purpose in my opinion, can be the difference between someone feeling satisfied with life and someone wasting time focused on what is happening in the lives of the purpose driven.

Challenges with friends, family, and coworkers are often rooted in a lack of purpose. Think about the most miserable person you’ve met. They are usually more focused on the lives of others and talking about the way those others live in an effort to make themselves feel complete.

The word purpose is defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Another meaning of the word is to have as one’s intention or objective. Based on these definitions offered by Oxford language search, it is easier to see why purpose is such an integral part of managing overall well-being.

Those people who are without passion seem to be simply existing. Sure, they go to work every day. They may even have families. However, there is nothing that fuels them to be excited about life or a thing that separates them from the other 250 people they work side-by-side with every day. On the other hand, some of our coworkers who have passions are often next to us on the assembly line or are waiting tables at the same restaurant. Yet, when they leave, they are working on projects – they could be submitting manuscripts, producing acting reels, or volunteering at shelters, and even working on business plans.

Is it time to identify the importance of knowing your purpose?

Whatever your purpose may be this could hold the key to improving your feelings of sadness, aimlessness or anxiety marked by an unidentifiable restlessness.

Here are three things that will help identify your purpose starting right now:

  1. Philanthropy: When we give of our time, talents and treasures we find out what we are truly meant to do in life. It is ironic and fascinating that while giving back to others you are simultaneously giving back to yourself by identifying the thing that makes you more, and more yourself.
  2. Passion: Passion boils down to enthusiasm, excitement and desire for something in your life. We often identify passion with feelings for others. While this is a type of passion, the feeling I am referring to is the passion you feel when you are alone with the thing that makes you feel you’ve connected with your purpose.

  3. Peers: Purpose can be found when we spend time with people who inspire us. We are not all fortunate enough to have a muse to ignite our purpose. However, we can all be very mindful about the company we keep in an attempt to always be less focused on pessimism and more focused on possibilities.

If you have ever felt comfortable stating, “This is what I’m doing for now in my life but I’m not sure it’s my purpose,” then it is time to identify the importance of knowing your purpose. It will not only give you a zeal for life but it will boost your mood and ensure that you are an asset to the people around you.
