Have you ever hit a pothole on your way to Whole Foods? It’s pretty upsetting and often frightening. Potholes can ruin your day and your tires. However, if there’s a hole in the asphalt on your favorite route to point B, you can continue on the path of rough resistance or you can go a different route.

Complaints about the pothole won’t make it less damaging to your car, instead, it makes it more damaging to your peace of mind – and your car maintenance fund. The sooner you choose another lane, or another route the better. Similarly, the sooner you accept what is, the better you will feel.

Oftentimes we read the proverbial handwriting on the wall and refuse to believe what we read. We make excuses, apply fantasies and let our imaginations virtually erase what’s in black and white. Now don’t misunderstand me, I’m all for optimism and seeing a glass at 50% capacity – calling it half full versus half empty.

However, there are times when you have to accept reality does not match your desire. Like when the concert is sold out and you have to wait until the next show. You were passed over for the job and you must refresh your resume. Despite your best efforts, something you really wanted to work out, fizzled out. A detour is ahead, and you have to take the scenic route.

The sooner you choose another lane, or another route the better. Similarly, the sooner you accept what is, the better you will feel.

If it’s hard to accept the reality staring you in the face, that’s normal. Here are 3 steps to accepting a narrative which proves opposite your best laid plans.

  1. Entertain a New Way: At times the new route or the new reality is a better fit for your needs than the one you originally considered.

  2. Educate Others on the New Way: When your new route to work proves to be the road less traveled and suddenly, you’re arriving at work 10 minutes early, tell your coworkers. They will thank you.

  3. Enjoy your New Way: It can be a fun adventure when one finds a whole new experience. Do your best to see the silver lining in the revised plan. The new way could eventually be the better way.
